AWIL 176 - YOUTH, Gaudi, Kiranpal Singh & Violeta Violin

The Painted Word of ‘Youth’ on this A World in London! Click:

When the line up for this AWIL session was confirmed by Riotsquad Publicity we knew they were going to deliver a tremendous finale to our wonderful 2017 – 2018 season, before the Summer break at Resonance FM. Legendary producer Martin ‘Youth’ Glover has assembled a dream team of musical visionaries whose many achievements echo his own pedigree that includes being one half of The Orb, the creative force behind timeless classics like Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve, not to mention his work with Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Killing Joke, and a veritable who’s who of the Pop industry. So there we were on Wednesday, in a tropical radio studio with Youth’s mighty cast that included Kiranpal Singh (whose name is synonymous with the sublime-sounding South Asian santoor), Gaudi (digi and Dub dynamo who’s just completed another awesome album, this time with Deep Forest), and up & coming Violeta Violin. These are just a handful of the illustrious names making records with or for Youth’s new labels, Suriya Records and Painted Word. Surprisingly, given Youth’s reputation as a bass player, there wasn’t a guitar or drum in sight, yet no-one cared because what followed was a free-form, spatial exploration into musical liberty, gleaned from multiple continents. Everyone at this sesh was born well away from the UK - Gaudi in Bologna, Violeta in Spain, Kiranpal in Dar-E-Salaam, and Youth in Nairobi -  and almost by default or design each individual as been drawn to non-mainstream sounds. Also, despite Youth’s unconventional route into music as a South London teenager that couldn’t play anything, but joined a Punk band anyhow, he has now surrounded himself with classical trained musos that have the virtuosity as well as the stomach for intense improvisation. Other common ground their shared rebellious streak that broke free of musical shackles, so whilst there is structure to blend theramin, violin, synths, santoor and harmonium into one beautiful, ambient movement, the rule-book has been thrown out. In a dialogue of mutual respect, no single instrument blares out and instead there’s a united  pursuit of futuristic spirit and freedom in sound. Look out for Painted Word’s palette of global albums this September!
