AWIL 172 - Kabantu

Magnificent music-makers - Of The People - Kabantu on this A World in London! Click:

What happens when a bunch of students from the Royal Northern College Of Music graduate? If they’re called Kabantu, they throw out the rule book and throw in a mighty section of the world. Forming their quintet 4 years ago, Kabantu are filled with passion for every sound, rhythm and reel they can lay their instrumentalised fingers on. To hear them play is a dynamic treat, filled with daring twists and turns that always leave you guessing, and gasping for breath. Sometimes the journey is so precarious you’re not sure that they’re going to make it around some musical hairpin bends, but then they do, taking you on an adrenaline-fuelled, cross-cultural ride of exhilaration. Hear the virtuosic members of Kabantu live on this AWIL, ranging from fast n’ furious fiddler Katie Foster, percussion goddess Delia Stevens, busking guitar-man Ben Sayah, big Ali McMath on big instruments like double-bass, didgeridoo, and banjo, plus gifted cellist Abel Selaocoe. Each band member has an inspirational story of how they got to where they are now, especially Abel whose unconventional route into classical music began in a South African township, minus a cello. These days for Kabantu, life is lived dangerously, on the edge, and just as their repertoire is packed with possibility and an infinite world of musicality, so too is their schedule: the occasional Prom, gigs at Bridgewater Hall, or in care-homes and schools as part of their work with Live Music Now. True to form, they nipped down from Manchester last night to play a gig in East London, came over to A World in London today, and then raced away straight after the show to perform at the Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton, leaving us dizzy in a whirlwind of sound, dazzled by their brilliance. Kabantu, from the people, for the people, and Of The People.
