AWIL 128 - Koki Nakano

Compositions in the Key of Life with Koki Nakano on this A World In London! Click:   Koki Nakano plays his first ever London concert tonight in Cadogan Hall, on stage just before the divine kora/cello duo Ballake Sissoko & Vincent Segal. In Koki’s young life to date, there have been some resounding love affairs, beginning with a piano encounter aged 3, discovering the joy of composing aged 18, and as a teen admiring the music of Vincent Segal from afar. Hence, Segal topped his list of must-have collaborators when he created his debut album, ‘Lift’. It’s a daunting prospect composing for your hero, and ‘containing’ him, away from his natural habitat of improvisation. Fortunately, in ‘Lift’, piano and cello equate as two essential halves in a dance of classical virtuosity, at times playful or intense, but always challenging each other to greater heights. In Koki’s scenic, sonic journey with Vincent, cello and piano breathe as one, tightly interwoven, answering each other’s searching questions. Koki is a thoughtful, serious and disciplined artist, and in ‘Lift’ he conjures up dramatic soundscapes rich with multi-layered depths. Find this compelling work on the No Format label and see Koki at Cadogan Hall on May 25th!
