AWIL 155 - Alexander D. Great
By

Genius lyrical master & Calypso monarch Alexander D. Great on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-world-in-london-21st-february-2018/

Everytime London’s premier Calypsonian returns to  AWIL, it’s with gusts of fresh air and renewed creative energy. Alex is a prolific craftsman of words and one the most shrewd social commentators of our times, astutely and eloquently observing events both past and present and underlaying them with infectious Caribbean rhythms, that twin the soul of Trinidad with urban London. It’s hard to imagine anyone being even vaguely able to match his skills, but over the last year, his songwriting partnership with pandiva and fellow Trini Debra Romain has gone from strength to strength. This West London pair harmonise perfectly in every sense, bringing out the best in each other’s voices, lyrics, and vision.  On this show you’ll hear their solo and collaborative songs about the Grenfell Tower tragedy,  overlooked community champions, and the ongoing disease of colonial exploitation in countries like Haiti. There are many types of protest music, but Alex has turned it into an artform,  wisely choosing his words tactically, strategically, and with finesse. Much has been made of Stormzy’s recent rant at the Brit Awards, but when it comes to the chess board of debating social injustice and oppression, Alexander D. Great is the undisputed grand master.
