Prodigious & ground-breaking British Jamaican composer Shirley J. Thompson on this Heritage at A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/heritage-at-a-world-in-london-18th-july-2017/

One of the most innovative, versatile, and accomplished composer/conductors of our generation, Shirley Thompson, will unveil her latest work at The Place on July 27th at Liturgie - Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival. Shirley's new one act opera is called ‘The Woman Who Refused To Dance’ and it’s narrative is based around a painting of an unknown slave suspended upside down & shackled from one ankle – her punishment for ‘defiance’ whilst being transported from Africa to Grenada in 1792. In Thompson’s production, this barbaric incident which gave impetus to William Wilberforce’s Abolition of Slavery Act in 1807, is played out on stage by superlative classical music stars like soprano Nadine Benjamin & dancer Tania Dimbelolo, and the life of the young woman is reimagined before and after her tragic and violent death. 'The Woman Who Refused To Dance' adds to Shirley’s superlative series – Heroines of Opera - and is simply unmissable so book your ticket for The Place in Euston London now! Hear more about the amazing work of pioneering Shirley J. Thompson – head to head - on this Heritage at AWIL!
