AWIL/CC 50 - Ramon Goose

Ramon Goose presented his new album - The West African Blues Project - on A World In London’s 50th programme at Resonance FM! Listen here:  Ramon is of mixed heritage – Scottish mother, Argentinean father – not your stereotypical Essex boy! Chopin and Nigerian Hi-Life played equally on the family stereo system, and days out included trips to small Clacton clubs harbouring meagre audiences for visiting Latin bands. Picking up the guitar at a young age, Ramon learned to play by ear and gradually sought out more challenging riffs & rhythms from other parts of the world. His early backstage WOMAD encounters with Baaba Maal and Diabel Cissokho eventually led him to Dakar and Marrakech 8 years ago and it was there that he mastered the connections between Berber and Blues, Mandinka and Memphis, gradually building skills & confidence to stand shoulder to shoulder with African griots and greats. Last year at a Bayswater restaurant, Ramon approached Senegalese singer Modou Touré with a demo of instrumentals, thus, the West African Blues Project was born. Modou added lyrics and his voice, a deal was signed with ARC Music, and this innovative album released in June. But things don't rest there for intuitive and deft-fingered guitarist Ramon. He’s also working with Indo-jazz pioneer Najma Akhtar and already forming his next band along with multi-instrumentalist Cassandre Balbar and percussionist Ndene Ndiagne.
