AWIL 101 - Varldens Band

Transglobal roots fusion from Världens Band on this A World In London! Hear them anytime anywhere by clicking here:

One of the many wonderful things about presenting AWIL from SOAS Radio is being around an abundance of musical talent. Students at this centre of excellence within London University restore faith that there is a bright new generation building a beautiful future in our globalised world, though perhaps with the exception of Russell ‘don’t vote’ Brand who’s just enrolled. Amongst the gifted alumni there is a young musician called Cassandre Balbar who between stints as the radio station manager and assisting with the SOAS Concert Series, would often bend my ear about her own projects. Collaborations with Ramon Goose, World Scatterlings Thodoris Ziarkas, taking her trusty bagpipes and recorders with her. Then one day she told me about yet another new project to which I responded with my usual yawn - ‘I see enough bands thank you’ - look. ’Ah, but this one is special’ she said. A year later she booked me to DJ for this band with an unpronounceable name at a Rich Mix Celebrating Life event, and that’s when I saw the light! On stage was a veritable league of nations, some bloke who looked like Morten Harket from a-ha, a South Indian singer, a Senegalese korist, and a whirlwind of Swedish folk fiddles and accordion. No-one in the group looked older than 18 and none of them had heard of a-ha. No-one in the audience knew which musical ambassador would take centre stage next and the element of surprise kept us transfixed. We witnessed a band that was bursting with infinite talent and vitality, and that have just now been touring Europe taking in WOMEX and Musicport along the way. There’s a rare chance to see them back at Rich Mix this Monday Oct 31st for an alternative Halloween brimming with treats not tricks. Go see them because Cassandre was right – Världens Band really  are rather special!!
