Rapasa Nyatrapasa Otieno

From Kenya With Love – Rapasa Nyatrapasa Otieno on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-world-in-london-4th-march-2020/

We caught wonderful Kenyan singer/songwriter Rapasa Nyatrapasa Otieno, just before his Tuned In London gig last week, alongside his beautiful handmade instruments and mellifluous voice. Rapasa hails from the Luo community who live along the shores of Nam Lolwe (Lake Victoria), and his connection to the traditional music of his people has taken him on an incredible  journey, composing and performing since the tender age of eight! Rapasa was taught by many masters of the Nyatiti, the traditional eight-string lyre of his people, and he continues that tradition by passing on musical teaching to the young. The melodic compositions you’ll hear on this show are all original pieces by Rapasa, played on a beautiful wooden Nyatiti he crafted himself. Rapasa's harmonious voice works in tandem with the lyre and percussion instruments including the Gara (ankle bells), and Oduong'o - a metal ring played with the foot - to create a joyous and beautiful sound which had the AWIL team transfixed. Rapasa’s new album, 'Tipona', meaning Shadow in his native Dholou language, is available for pre-order now and will be released on March 13th. Rapasa’s sound is raw, organic, and earthy, emanating from a poetic heart – listen here!
